Belmont Stakes May Temporarily Shift to Saratoga Race Course
There’s a potential relocation on the horizon for the Belmont Stakes, the third jewel of the Triple Crown in horse racing, and it could find a temporary home at the scenic Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York, earlier than originally anticipated.
The New York Racing Association (NYRA) is considering hosting the Belmont at Saratoga in both 2024 and 2025. This expedited move, previously slated for 2025 due to a $455 million renovation project at Belmont Park, hinges on approval from an oversight board and the New York State Gaming Commission.
A final decision regarding this relocation is expected to be reached in the months to come.
NYRA’s Vice President of Communications, Patrick McKenna, disclosed that the organization’s vision encompasses holding the race at Saratoga for two years, “to ensure the uninterrupted progress of the new and entirely reimagined Belmont Park.”
It’s important to note that there are no intentions to permanently shift the Belmont Stakes, nor are there any plans to alter its traditional timing on the calendar, customarily taking place in early June, three weeks following the Preakness and five weeks after the Kentucky Derby.
“The ambitious undertaking to transform Belmont Park into a premier sports and entertainment destination will necessitate temporary adjustments to the customary racing schedule,” McKenna underscored in a statement shared with The Associated Press. “Conducting the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course would undoubtedly capture the attention of the sporting world while stimulating tourism and bolstering the upstate New York economy.”
